Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Do I have to have a strong science background?

A. It's not necessary. Everything you will need to know you'll learn during the training session. However, an interest in ecology and the environment as well as a strong desire to teach children in an outdoor setting is essential.

Q. What do I wear?

A. Clothes that will keep you warm and dry since you will be teaching outdoors most of the time. Nice looking, clean jeans and sweaters are appropriate.

Q. Is McKeever like a camp?

A. McKeever is an educational center, not a recreational camp. Activities involve discovery of concepts related to the environment and do not include things such as archery, swimming and canoeing.

Q. Do I have to stay at McKeever on the weekends?

A. Student teachers/interns are responsible for teaching Monday through Friday. You are not required to spend your weekend on site.

Q. Who will I be working with?

A. You will be working with one of the Environmental Educators), your university supervisor and student teachers from/interns from other universities.

Q. Is there a cost?

A. Housing, and 60% of your meals are provided at a nominal fee for 8 weeks. Student teachers/interns must also purchase the training manual.

Q. Will I teach in the evening?

A. During the Earthkeepers and Sunship Earth programs, evening activities are part of the experience. However, student teachers/interns will not teach more than an eight-hour day. These hours will not necessarily be consecutive throughout the day.

Q. Will I be living with elementary students?

A. No. Teachers and parents are responsible for the students at night. Student teachers/interns live on site, although their housing is separate from the elementary students.
